About Flag Football Analytics
Flag Football Analytics is a product of Illumined Analytics, built for the coaches, players, and fans of high school flag football. We publish weekly rankings, playoff simulations, strategy articles, and a full analytics course for coaches who want to make better decisions with data.
Our Mission
Flag football has grown up fast, but its analytics haven't caught up. Tackle football has had scouting frameworks, decision math, and situational data for decades. Flag has mostly run on intuition. Our mission is to close that gap and give every flag coach the tools to coach with evidence instead of guesswork.
What We Do
We maintain ELO-based rankings for Alabama 6A/7A flag football, run weekly Monte Carlo playoff simulations, and write strategy articles grounded in math and game theory rather than coaching folklore. We also teach a 12-module course on data-driven decision-making, game management, and game preparation, built specifically for flag.
The Team
Flag Football Analytics is built by Dr. Stephen Hill, founder of Illumined Analytics and an Associate Professor of Data Analytics at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, with a Ph.D. from the University of Alabama. His work centers on decision-making systems in business and sports, including sports analytics and in-game modeling, and he teaches students how to take statistics from theory to real-world use. He builds the rankings, simulations, and articles on this site, and wrote the Flag Football Analytics course. You can read more about his work at drstephenhill.com.
Why We Built This
The sport is growing fast
Flag football is an Olympic sport for LA 2028 and one of the fastest-growing high school sports in the country. Alabama added it as a sanctioned championship sport in recent years, and programs and rosters are expanding every season.
The analytics layer is missing
Tackle football has decades of advanced metrics, scouting platforms, and analytics-driven decision-making. Flag football is mostly operating without that infrastructure. We build the things we wish existed.
