ELO Rating System

Our power rankings utilize an ELO rating system that dynamically adjusts team ratings based on game results and opponent strength. Each victory or defeat causes rating adjustments proportional to the strength of the opponent and the margin of victory.

Rating System Comparisons

We provide three different ELO rating views to help you understand the impact of preseason initialization:

• Initialized (w/ MaxPreps): ELO ratings initialized using final 2024 MaxPreps rankings, then updated with 2025 game results
• Cold Start: ELO ratings starting from a neutral baseline (1500) with no preseason bias, updated only with 2025 results
• Difference: Shows how much the MaxPreps initialization affects each team's current rating (positive = helped by preseason ranking)

Teams not ranked in MaxPreps 2024 final standings were assigned a default ELO rating of 1400 in the initialized system.

Game Inclusion Criteria

Rankings and records reflect only games between 6A/7A division teams as reported to Dragonfly Athletics. Games against lower divisions, scrimmages, and unreported contests are excluded to maintain ranking integrity.

Update Frequency: Weekly following each round of games
