2026 Alabama Flag Football Season Hub: Mid-September Update

Current 2026 AHSAA flag football coverage from the September 15 rankings snapshot: statewide ratings, schedule strength, model movement, update cadence, and early-season caveats.

This is the current-season starting point for 2026 Alabama high school girls flag football on Flag Football Analytics. The September 15 snapshot covers 148 teams, 288 completed games, and 284 rated games. It is rebuilt from the DragonFly/AHSAA schedule feed by the public rankings pipeline and published as a machine-readable JSON snapshot, so the table is reproducible rather than hand-curated.

Use this page for context, then use the live rankings table when you need the latest team-by-team record, rating view, region filter, or matchup estimate. Scores are entered by schools and can arrive after the game date, so a missing result is a data-timing problem before it is a model conclusion.

What changed this season

The state is now organized around four flag football championship divisions: 6A, 5A, 1A-4A, and Private. A school's playoff path is divisional, but its rating is statewide. That distinction matters: a 1A-4A contender can rate ahead of many 6A teams, and cross-division games are useful evidence rather than noise. The model connects the divisions through the opponents teams actually play.

What the table says right now

Central High School, Phenix City remains the statewide leader, while Moody is the highest-ranked 1A-4A team and Montgomery Catholic is the highest-ranked private program. The standings are not interchangeable with playoff seeds: the model is answering “how strong has this team looked against its schedule?” while the postseason answers a separate divisional-bracket question.

Schedule strength helps explain why records alone can mislead. Johnson Abernathy Graetz (JAG) is 0-3 but has the highest schedule-strength value in the current file at 28.4. Montgomery Catholic is 3-1 with a 22.8 schedule-strength value, while Vestavia Hills is 8-2 with a lower 7.0 value. None of those numbers is a judgment about a program; they are context for how much opposition sits behind a record.

How to read early ratings

Teams with fewer than four rated games remain provisional. The current model starts with discounted prior-season information, fits all rated games together, caps extreme margins at 28 points, and estimates a 1.2-point home-field effect in this snapshot. The rating gap is useful for a matchup estimate, but it is not certainty: injuries, roster changes, weather, coaching decisions, and unreported scores are outside the model.

Three useful ways to use this hub

  1. Find context behind a record. Compare a team's schedule-strength value with its win-loss record before deciding whether it is improving or simply playing a soft slate.
  2. Separate signal from sample size. Treat a four-game rating as more informative than a one-game rating, and read the provisional marker before drawing conclusions.
  3. Follow movement, not just rank. Use the cold-start and seeding-impact views to see which teams are still carrying last season's prior and which are pulling away from it.

Data and methods

Numbers on this page come from the public rankings snapshot, generated at . The snapshot includes every classified or currently listed AHSAA varsity girls flag football team, while the rating fit uses completed in-state varsity games that pass the pipeline's inclusion rules.
